The IC-7610 landed in early 2018 and immediately reshuffled what hams expected from a base station HF rig under $5,000. Icom took the direct-sampling SDR architecture from the IC-7300 — which had already disrupted the entry-level market — and built a no-compromise, dual-receiver contest station around it. Five years of daily use later, I'm writing this review not as a first-impression piece, but as someone who has genuinely worn the buttons smooth on this radio.

Fair warning: I'm going to be honest about both the strengths and the shortcomings. This is a $4,500 radio (street price as of 2025), and at that price point, you deserve to know exactly what you're getting.

What the IC-7610 Actually Is

At its core, the IC-7610 is a direct-sampling SDR transceiver. Unlike superheterodyne radios that convert RF signals through intermediate frequencies using analog mixing stages, the 7610 digitizes the incoming RF signal directly at the antenna port using a high-speed ADC (analog-to-digital converter). All filtering, demodulation, and signal processing happens in the digital domain via FPGA.

This isn't a "software defined radio" in the sense of an RTL-SDR dongle. It's a full-featured, 100-watt HF/50 MHz transceiver with two completely independent receivers sharing a single antenna input. Each receiver has its own ADC, its own FPGA processing chain, and its own audio output.

The Dual-Receiver: Not a Gimmick

Some radios offer "dual watch" as an afterthought — a sub-receiver with compromised performance that you use occasionally. The IC-7610's dual receivers are genuinely equal in performance. Both share the same ADC quality, the same DSP capabilities, the same filter options.

In contest operation, this changes your workflow entirely. You can transmit on one frequency while listening to a second frequency for multipliers. During CQ WW, I run on 20m SSB on the main receiver while the sub-receiver scans 15m for new multipliers on the waterfall. When I spot one, I can QSY the sub to that frequency, listen, and decide whether to break from my run — all without losing my run frequency.

For SO2R (Single Operator, Two Radio) operators, the 7610 effectively replaces two radios. You need a second antenna to fully exploit this (the SUB receiver has its own antenna jack), but even with a single antenna shared between both receivers, it's remarkably capable.

Real-World Receiver Performance

Specs are one thing. On-air performance is another.

I operate from a suburban lot with three antennas within 50 feet of each other, moderate RFI from a neighbor's solar inverter, and a power line that arcs when it rains. The IC-7610 handles this environment better than the IC-7300 it replaced and better than a friend's Elecraft K3S that I've operated side-by-side on the same antenna.

The close-in dynamic range is where this radio earns its price. During CQ WPX SSB last year, with a dozen S9+40 European stations packed between 14.150 and 14.200, I could copy a weak JA station at 14.195 that simply wasn't audible on the IC-7300. The roofing filter equivalent in the SDR architecture just handles strong adjacent signals without the reciprocal mixing products that plague lesser receivers.

That said — and here's where I'll push back on the hype — the IC-7610 is not meaningfully better than an Elecraft K3S or Flex 6600 in most real-world scenarios. The spec sheet shows advantages in IP3 and phase noise, but those translate to audible differences only in extreme conditions (contest-level signal density on a big antenna). For daily DXing and ragchewing, a $2,000 IC-7300 gets you 90% of the way there.

Honestly? If you're not contesting seriously or operating in RF-dense environments, the 7610 is more radio than most people need.

The Waterfall and Spectrum Display

The 7-inch touchscreen shows a real-time spectrum scope and waterfall display with a bandwidth up to ±500 kHz around your center frequency. The resolution is good enough to visually identify signal types: CW signals appear as thin lines, SSB as wider smears, FT8 as periodic dots.

I use the waterfall constantly. Not just for spotting signals, but for identifying interference patterns, checking band occupancy before calling CQ, and monitoring contest band edges. Going back to a radio without a waterfall feels like driving without mirrors.

The touchscreen interface for changing frequencies (tap on a signal in the waterfall to tune to it) works well once you calibrate your expectations. It's responsive but not iPhone-smooth. The physical VFO knobs remain the primary tuning method for me, but the touch interface excels for quick band scanning.

Transmit Quality

The IC-7610 transmits a clean signal with adjustable compression, parametric EQ, and multiple mic processing options. On-air reports consistently describe the audio as "full" and "broadcast-like" when properly set up.

The built-in audio scope lets you monitor your transmit signal in real-time — showing ALC levels, compression amount, and spectral shape of your transmitted audio. This is genuinely useful for dialing in microphone settings without relying solely on on-air reports.

I use an Electro-Voice RE320 dynamic mic into the front panel mic jack. Out of the box, the default audio settings were thin and compressed. It took about 45 minutes of tweaking the TX parametric EQ (low cut at 100 Hz, slight boost at 2.2 kHz, rolloff above 2.7 kHz for contest, wider for ragchew) to get audio reports that matched my preference. The menu system for this isn't intuitive — you'll be reading the manual.

What I Don't Like

No radio is perfect at any price point. Here's where the IC-7610 frustrates me:

The fan. It runs constantly during transmit and takes 30+ seconds to spin down afterward. At 100W SSB, it's audible from across the room. Not loud, but present. If you're in a quiet shack doing late-night CW at low power, you'll hear it.

Menu depth. Icom hides too many important settings three or four menu levels deep. The touchscreen helps, but finding a specific setting you changed six months ago requires either memorizing menu numbers or keeping the manual handy. The Elecraft K3S handles this better with its more logical menu structure.

No built-in antenna tuner. At $4,500, the lack of an internal ATU is annoying. Yes, Icom sells the AH-705/AT-100 external tuner, and yes, a resonant antenna system is ideal. But every radio in this price bracket from Yaesu (FTDX101D) includes an internal tuner. You'll spend another $200-400 on an external tuner unless your antenna system is perfectly matched.

USB audio interface quirks. The 7610 has built-in USB audio for digital modes, which is great in theory. In practice, I've had the USB audio drop out during long FT8 sessions (8+ hours), requiring a cable replug. This might be a Windows driver issue rather than a radio issue, but it's happened on three different computers. I now run a separate SignaLink USB as a backup for important contest operations.

No internal voice keyer storage. The radio can do voice memory keying, but only when connected to a SD card or via the CI-V remote control. The FTDX101D and K3S handle this internally. Minor gripe, but during contests, one fewer thing to manage matters.

Who Should Buy the IC-7610

This radio makes the most sense for:

  • Contesters who want SO2R capability in a single box
  • Serious DXers operating from RF-dense locations or with large antenna systems
  • Operators upgrading from an IC-7300 who want dual-receive and better close-in dynamic range
  • Anyone who values the waterfall/spectrum display as a primary operating tool

It does NOT make sense for:

  • Casual operators who primarily ragchew on 75m (the IC-7300 does this equally well)
  • Portable/field operators (it weighs 28 pounds and needs AC mains)
  • Budget-conscious hams who'd be better served by the IC-7300 at $1,200 and investing the remaining $3,300 in antennas

That last point deserves emphasis. A $1,200 radio with a $3,000 antenna system will outperform a $4,500 radio with a compromised antenna every single time. Spend money on antennas first.

Each has trade-offs. The FTDX101D has the tuner and arguably better audio processing. The K3S is lighter with legendary receiver performance in a traditional package. The Flex 6600 offers unlimited panadapter bandwidth and remote operation but requires a computer to function.

I chose the IC-7610 because the combination of self-contained operation (no external computer required), dual independent receivers, and that real-time waterfall matched how I operate.

After Five Years

The IC-7610 hasn't depreciated much. Used units sell for $3,500-3,800 because demand remains high and Icom hasn't released a direct successor. The firmware has received steady updates (we're at version 1.40 as of early 2025), adding features like expanded memory channels and improved scope performance.

Would I buy it again? Yes, but with a caveat: if Icom releases an IC-7620 (or whatever the successor will be) with an internal tuner and improved USB stability, I'd upgrade. For now, the 7610 remains the best self-contained contest-capable SDR base station you can buy without stepping into the $8,000+ tier (IC-7851, Flex 6700).

It's not perfect. But it's the radio that made me stop looking at other radios, and for an equipment junkie, that's saying something.
