Somebody on r/amateurradio last week posted that you need $2,000 minimum to get on HF. Fifty-three comments told him he was wrong. He is wrong. I built a fully functional HF station for $437 that's worked 38 DXCC entities in its first year, and I'm going to show you how to do the same.
This isn't a theoretical exercise. These are actual prices from current ham swap meets, eBay sold listings, and vendor sales. Your mileage will vary by $50-100 depending on patience and local market, but the overall approach works.
The Budget Breakdown
Let's establish what "complete station" means: a transceiver, power supply, antenna, feedline, and basic accessories to get on the air and make contacts. Not a contest superstation. Not a shack that'll impress visitors. A working setup that puts RF in the air and decodes signals.
Here's what I'm targeting:
- Transceiver: $200-300
- Power supply: $40-70
- Antenna: $30-60
- Coax and connectors: $30-50
- Accessories: $20-40
Total: Under $500.
The Radio: Where Most of Your Budget Goes
Option 1: Used Yaesu FT-450D ($200-280 used)
This is my pick for the budget HF operator who wants SSB and CW on 160-6 meters with a built-in antenna tuner. The FT-450D shows up on eBay and at hamfests constantly because people upgrade to IC-7300s and dump these. They're solid radios. Not flashy, no waterfall display, but the receiver works well and the transmitter puts out 100 watts.
I picked mine up at a hamfest in Dayton (not THE Dayton, a smaller regional one in Ohio) for $225 with the original box and manual. The seller upgraded to a Flex and wanted it gone.
Option 2: Xiegu G90 ($350-380 new)
If you want new gear with a warranty, the G90 is hard to beat. 20 watts output, built-in tuner, detachable head, 160-10 meters. The 20-watt limit means you're running QRP-ish power, but on FT8 and CW? Twenty watts works fine with a decent antenna.
(Full disclosure: twenty watts on SSB during a contest is going to be frustrating. If you plan to do phone contesting, spring for the used 100-watt rig instead.)
Option 3: Used Icom IC-718 ($180-250 used)
No built-in tuner, no frills, but this radio is a tank. Been in production for over 20 years. Parts and support are everywhere. Audio quality on SSB is good for the price. You'll need an external tuner, but we'll address that.
My Recommendation
FT-450D used if you can find one in good condition. That built-in tuner saves you $80-100 on an external unit, and 100 watts gives you flexibility the G90 doesn't have. Check your local ham club's swap list first before going to eBay.
Power Supply
Your radio needs 13.8 VDC at 20+ amps (for a 100-watt rig). Options:
Budget pick: Powerwerx SS-30DV ($80 new, $40-50 used) Switching supply, quiet enough for HF, compact. Some guys report very faint switching noise on 160m. I've never noticed it with mine, but if you're a Top Band purist, you might care.
Cheaper option: Used Astron RS-20A ($30-50 at hamfests) Linear supply, zero switching noise, built like a brick. Weighs about as much as one too. These things last 30+ years. I've seen RS-20As from the 1990s still putting out clean power. At hamfests, they go for almost nothing because everyone wants the lighter switching supplies.
Honestly? The old Astron is the better radio choice. Fight me.
Antenna: The Most Important $50 You'll Spend
Here's where budget operators go wrong. They blow $350 on a radio and then hang a random wire out the window. The antenna makes more difference to your signal than anything else in the chain. A $50 antenna built correctly will outperform a $200 antenna built poorly.
The Half-Wave Dipole: Free to $30
A dipole for 20 meters requires about 33 feet of wire total (two 16.5-foot legs), a center insulator, some rope, and two trees. That's it.
Materials:
- 50 feet of 14 AWG stranded copper wire: $15 at hardware store
- Center insulator (or make one from a piece of cutting board): $5 or free
- 50 feet of paracord: $5
- End insulators (dog bones): $3
Total: Under $30. And you've got a proper resonant antenna.
For multi-band operation, build a fan dipole (multiple dipole pairs on one feedpoint) or a simple 20/40 trapped dipole. Trap dipole kits run about $40-50 from vendors like Buddipole or various eBay sellers.
The End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW): $30-60
An EFHW for 40 meters (about 66 feet of wire) with a 49:1 transformer works on 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters without a tuner on most of those bands. You can buy transformer kits for $25-40, or wind your own on a FT240-43 toroid for about $12 in parts.
I hung a 66-foot EFHW between my roof peak and a tree across the yard. Height varies from about 25 feet at the feedpoint to maybe 15 feet at the far end. Not optimal. Works anyway. Forty-seven states worked on 40m SSB in three months.
What About Verticals?
A commercial multi-band vertical like the Hustler 5-BTV runs $200+ new. That blows the antenna budget. But a homebrew vertical for 20m (about 16.5 feet of aluminum tubing or wire along a fiberglass pole) with a few dozen radials can work well for $40-60 in materials.
Skip the no-radial verticals in this price range. They compromise too much.
Feedline: Don't Cheap Out Here
You need coax from your antenna to your radio. For runs under 50 feet on HF:
RG-8X (mini-8): About $0.40-0.60/foot. Acceptable loss on HF for shorter runs. A 50-foot length with connectors will run you $25-35.
LMR-240: Slightly better than RG-8X, similar price. Good compromise between loss and flexibility.
Don't use RG-58 for anything longer than 25 feet. The loss adds up faster than you'd think (we've got a whole article on coax loss if you want the math).
You'll need PL-259 connectors. Buy the crimp type and a proper crimp tool ($15), or solder them. Soldering PL-259s isn't hard once you've done two or three, but that first one will look like modern art. Bad modern art.
Accessories
Minimum needs beyond radio + antenna + feedline:
- SWR meter: If your radio has a built-in one (most do), you're fine. If not, a used MFJ-822 or similar runs $20-30.
- Patch cables: Short RG-8X jumpers for tuner connections, $5-10
- Antenna analyzer: Not strictly required to get on the air, but a NanoVNA ($50) will save you hours of antenna trimming frustration. Best $50 accessory purchase in ham radio.
- Clock set to UTC: Free. Use your computer.
- Logging software: Free. Use WSJT-X (for digital), N1MM+ (for contesting), or QRZ Logbook (for casual logging).

Build 1: The CW/Digital Operator ($380)

Where to Find Used Gear
In order of reliability and price:
- Local ham club swap meets: Best prices, you can inspect gear, and sellers usually have reputations to protect
- QRZ.com swap forums: Active marketplace, PayPal protection
- r/hamfest on Reddit: Smaller volume but decent deals
- eBay: Largest selection but highest prices. Sort by "sold" to check actual market values before bidding.
- Facebook ham swap groups: Hit or miss. Some great deals from estates, some scammers.
Always ask for a power-on test or recent QSO log showing the rig works. For eBay, check the seller's feedback specifically for radio sales.
What You're Giving Up
Let's be honest about what a $500 station doesn't get you:
- No waterfall display (unless you use SDR software as a panadapter)
- No built-in sound card for digital modes on older rigs (USB interface adds $20-40)
- Limited band coverage depending on antenna choice
- No amplifier capability
- Modest receive performance compared to $2,000+ radios
But here's what it does get you: on the air, making contacts, learning HF operating. That matters more than specs. I've watched guys spend 18 months researching their "perfect first HF rig" while spending zero minutes actually operating. Don't be that guy.
Tips for Stretching the Budget Further
Join a local ham club. Members sell gear to each other cheap, loan equipment for testing, and often have communal tools (antenna analyzers, watt meters) you can borrow.
Check estate sales. When a ham passes away (it happens often, our average age is... well, you know), families sell entire stations for pennies on the dollar because they don't know what they have.
Build your own accessories. A dummy load is a 50-ohm non-inductive resistor in a paint can with oil. Cost: $8. A commercial one: $40. A 1:1 choke balun is 10 turns of coax on an FT240-43 core. Cost: $12. Commercial: $50+.
Start on 20 meters. It's open almost every day, has tons of activity, and a single-band dipole is cheap and effective. You can always add bands later.
Final Thoughts
Five hundred dollars gets you a real HF station. Not a dream-about-it-someday station, a working-contacts-tonight station. The barrier to HF isn't money. It's decision paralysis and the myth that you need a $3,000 IC-7610 to have fun.
Get the General license, buy a used rig, hang some wire in a tree, and get on the air. You can upgrade everything later once you know what actually matters to your operating style. Half the expensive accessories people buy in their first year end up on the swap table at next year's hamfest anyway.
