Yaesu dropped the FT-710 AESS into a market slot that nobody else was seriously filling. Below the FTDX101D's price but above the bargain bin. A true SDR architecture without the flagship cost. After running one as my primary HF rig for eight months, here's where it lands.

Short version: it's the rig Yaesu should have made five years ago. Not perfect, but the ratio of performance to dollars spent is genuinely hard to beat right now.

Let's get the numbers out of the way:

The AESS (Active Electronic Shift Stabilizer) in the name refers to Yaesu's system for maintaining frequency stability without a traditional TCXO warm-up period. It works — I've measured less than ±0.5 ppm drift after the first minute of power-on.

First Impressions and Build Quality

Out of the box, it feels like a proper transceiver. Not a toy. The case is solid aluminum, the VFO knob has appropriate weight and no wobble, and the buttons have positive tactile click. It's compact — noticeably smaller than my previous FTDX10 — but doesn't feel cramped.

The display is a 4.3-inch color TFT. Adequate. Not stunning like the 7-inch screens on the IC-7610 or FTDX101D, but clear enough that I've never squinted at it. The waterfall is smooth and responsive, updating fast enough for real-time signal spotting.

One gripe right away: the speaker is on the bottom. If you set this on a flat desk, the audio bounces off the surface and sounds boxy. I ended up using headphones 90% of the time or tilting the rig back with a small stand. Yaesu has done this on other models (FT-991A has the same issue), and I wish they'd stop.

Receiver Performance

This is where the FT-710 earns its keep.

The direct-sampling SDR architecture means no analog IF stages, no roofing filters to buy separately, and filter bandwidth adjustable in real-time with no artifacts or pops during adjustment. You grab the MULTI knob, twist, and the passband narrows or widens smoothly.

On a busy 40m evening with strong signals every 2-3 kHz, the FT-710 holds its composure. I ran it side by side with a friend's IC-7300 during a CW contest (he was operating from my shack, we split antennas with a switch), and the FT-710 showed slightly better IMD performance when a contest station was S9+40 next door to a weak DX signal. Not night and day. Maybe 3-5 dB better in that specific torture test.

The noise floor is where I expected — around -130 dBm MDS on 20m in a 500 Hz bandwidth. Solid. Not Hilberling territory, but you're also not paying Hilberling prices.

Narrow CW Filtering

I primarily operate CW, and the DSP filtering down to 50 Hz is usable without ringing artifacts. At 200 Hz, it's excellent — tight enough to pull one signal out of a pileup, wide enough that normal CW sounds musical rather than like a single tone through a straw.

The IF shift and notch filter work as expected. APF (Audio Peak Filter) adds another layer on CW that narrows perceived bandwidth even further. I leave it off most of the time, but during a big contest with wall-to-wall signals, it helps.

Transmit Audio and Power

SSB transmit audio out of the box with the included MH-31 hand mic is... fine. Serviceable. Nobody will compliment it, but nobody will complain either. Swap in a Heil PR-781 or similar communications mic and the parametric EQ in the menu lets you shape things nicely.

The three-band parametric EQ gives you enough control. I'd love a five-band, but three bands covering 100-3200 Hz with adjustable center, width, and gain is workable.

Power output is rated 100W and I measured 98W into my Bird 43 on 20m at full output. On 6 meters (50 MHz), it still delivers a solid 100W. The fan kicks in above about 50W sustained TX, and it's audible but not obnoxious. During a long contest session it becomes background noise you stop noticing.

The Waterfall and Spectrum Scope

Up to 1200 kHz of bandwidth displayed in real time. For casual operating — spinning the dial, looking for activity — this is plenty. For contest use where you want to see an entire band at once, you'll wish for more. The IC-7610 does ±500 kHz per VFO (1 MHz total), so they're in the same neighborhood.

Waterfall speed has three settings. I keep it on MID. FAST uses more processor cycles and I've noticed very occasional display lag when the band is packed. Could be firmware-fixable in a future update.

Color schemes are adjustable. I landed on the blue-yellow gradient — easiest on my eyes during long sessions.

What I Don't Love

Look, no $1,200 rig is going to be flawless.

Menu system: Deep. Yaesu's menu structure requires memorizing numbers or constant reference to the manual. They've added a QUICK MENU for favorites, which helps, but initial setup took me an evening of menu diving. Compare to Icom's touchscreen approach where at least you can see options laid out visually.

No built-in antenna tuner. At this price point, I expected one. The FTDX10 has one. The IC-7300 has one. The FT-710 makes you buy the external FC-50 or use a third-party tuner. Yaesu's reasoning is apparently that they wanted to keep the size down, but it stings when competitors include it.

USB audio interface quirks. The FT-710 does USB audio for digital modes, and it works, but I had to fiddle with Windows audio settings more than I should have. The audio levels coming from the rig via USB were inconsistent between SSB and digital mode switching for the first few firmware versions. Firmware 1.04 mostly fixed this, but if you're buying used, make sure it's updated.

No second receiver. Single-receiver SDR. If you want SO2R or dual-watch with full independence, look elsewhere. For the price, this is expected, but worth stating.

Compared to the Competition

The natural comparisons:

  • Icom IC-7300 (~$1,100): The FT-710 has a more modern SDR implementation with wider real-time bandwidth and slightly better close-in dynamic range. The IC-7300 has the touchscreen, built-in tuner, and a larger user community with more aftermarket support. Honestly? Both are excellent. The FT-710 edges ahead on raw receiver specs.

  • Yaesu FTDX10 (~$1,700): Essentially the same radio in a bigger box with a bigger screen, built-in tuner, and dual-band receive capability. If you need dual receive, get the FTDX10. If not, save the $500.

  • Kenwood TS-590SG (~$1,500, harder to find new): Older architecture, superheterodyne. Legendary receiver but no waterfall, no modern SDR features. Different era.

I pulled 47 FT8 contacts in 2 hours on 20m my first day with the FT-710, running barefoot into a 40m dipole used as a compromise antenna on 20m. The rig wasn't the limiting factor. Not once.

Who Should Buy This

The FT-710 makes sense if you:

  • Want current-generation SDR performance without spending $2,000+
  • Operate primarily one band at a time (no dual receive)
  • Already have an external tuner or resonant antennas
  • Value receiver performance over bells and whistles
  • Want something compact for a smaller shack

It's less ideal if you:

  • Need a built-in tuner (budget the FC-50 add-on cost)
  • Want SO2R or full dual-receive
  • Prefer touchscreen operation (this is all knobs and buttons)
  • Need 200W output (look at the FTDX101D)

Eight Months Later

The honeymoon period is over. I've used this rig through two contest seasons, daily FT8 monitoring, casual CW ragchewing, and a few portable setups (it's light enough for that).

My honest assessment: it's stayed on the desk. I haven't felt the itch to upgrade, which is the real test. The things that bugged me initially (menu depth, no tuner) I've adapted to. The things that matter daily (receiver performance, stability, reliability) have been solid.

One firmware update arrived that improved the scope speed and fixed a minor bug with CAT control timing. Yaesu's firmware update track record is spotty historically — they tend to do a few updates in the first year then go quiet. We'll see. (The rig works fine as-is; I'm not depending on future firmware to fix anything broken.)

Bottom Line

The FT-710 AESS is a well-executed mid-range SDR that punches above its price in receiver performance. It makes compromises — no tuner, no second receiver, compact display — but the compromises are in areas that don't affect on-air results.

If Yaesu had included a tuner, this would be a no-brainer recommendation. As it stands, it's still a strong choice, just budget an extra $150-200 for the FC-50 or a manual tuner if your antenna system needs one.
