The IC-705 is the radio that makes people irrationally happy. I've never seen a piece of ham gear generate as much enthusiasm as this thing. People buy it, take it to a park, make 3 contacts, and post photos like they just summited Everest.

I get it. I'm one of those people. But after a year of actual use, let me separate the genuine magic from the marketing hype.
What It Is
10 watts. HF through 70cm. Color touchscreen with real-time spectrum waterfall. Built-in battery. Bluetooth. WiFi. GPS. D-STAR. Internal antenna tuner (optional). Weighs 2.2 lbs with battery.
It's an IC-7300 that got shrunk in the dryer and grew VHF/UHF capabilities. That's the pitch in one sentence.
What Makes It Special
The form factor. Nothing else combines all-band/all-mode coverage with a spectrum display in a package this small. The closest competitor (Xiegu X6100) has a fraction of the receiver quality and no VHF/UHF.
The waterfall. Same technology as the IC-7300 — direct-sampling SDR with a responsive color display. Seeing the band while operating portable is an enormous advantage. Spot activity visually. Tap a signal. Tune instantly.
It's an actual Icom. The receiver performance, audio quality, and build are genuine Icom. Not a Chinese SDR with a touchscreen glued on (no shade — those have their place). This is a serious radio that happens to be small.
Bluetooth audio and CAT control. Pair it with your phone. Run FT8 on a phone app (Pocket FT8). Operate the radio remotely via WiFi using RS-BA1. The wireless integration is polished.
The Honest Limitations
10 watts. That's the ceiling. On SSB, 10W is marginal for pileups and contests. For FT8 and CW it's fine — those modes are designed for weak signals. For SSB POTA activations, I get my 10 contacts but it takes longer than someone running 100W.
You can add an external amp (Hardrock-50, ~$400 for 50W) but then you're carrying more weight, more cables, more battery drain.
Battery life. The internal BP-272 (7.4V, 2000mAh) lasts about 2-3 hours of mixed RX/TX at 5W. That's not a full POTA activation for many people. Solutions: external battery via DC jack, or buy the larger BP-307 ($80, extends to ~4 hours). I always carry an external Bioenno 4.5Ah pack.
The price. $1,300 for a 10W radio. That's the elephant in the room. For the same money you get an IC-7300 (100W, phenomenal HF) or an FT-891 + IC-705's cost in accessories. The premium is for portability and integration. Worth it? Depends how much you value operating from a mountaintop.
The internal tuner is extra. The AH-705 tuner is sold separately (~$200) and only handles up to 50 MHz. Icom's pricing strategy here is annoying — on a $1,300 radio, including the tuner should be standard.
Fragility concerns. It's a $1,300 radio you're carrying through woods, setting on rocks, and exposing to weather. The screen scratches. The chassis dents. Buy a protective case (LC-192) and accept that portable radios live a harder life.
POTA & SOTA Performance
This is where the IC-705 was born to live.
POTA setup time: Under 5 minutes. Radio out of bag, battery connected, antenna wire thrown over branch, on the air. No laptop needed for SSB/CW activations.
FT8 portable: Pair with phone via Bluetooth. Run Pocket FT8 app. No cables between radio and phone. The future of portable digital modes.
SOTA (Summits on the Air): Where the 705 dominates. Every ounce matters on a summit hike. 2.2 lbs for an all-band all-mode radio with waterfall? Nothing else comes close. The KX2 (Elecraft, $900) is lighter but has no VHF/UHF and no waterfall.
My typical POTA kit:
- IC-705 + BP-307 battery
- EFHW antenna (40m wire, 49:1 unun)
- Throw line + small counterpoise
- Phone for logging (HAMRS app)
Total weight: ~4 lbs. Setup time: 8 minutes. Average contacts per hour: 12-15 on SSB, 20+ on FT8.
Compared to Alternatives
vs Elecraft KX2 (~$900): The KX2 is the purist's portable radio. HF only, 10W, amazing receiver, CW-optimized, lighter (0.9 lbs without battery). No waterfall. No VHF. No touchscreen. It's a tool; the IC-705 is an experience. I know operators who own both and choose based on activity.
vs Xiegu X6100 (~$550): Half the price. HF + 6m, 10W, touchscreen, waterfall. The receiver doesn't compare — dynamic range, phase noise, and sensitivity are noticeably worse. VHF/UHF absent. Build quality is good-not-great. Best described as "80% of the IC-705 for 40% of the price." Legitimate option if budget is primary.
vs Lab599 TX-500 (~$800): Field-rugged, mil-spec feel, HF+6m, 10W. No waterfall. Designed for expedition use (IP67 with proper sealing). If you operate in rain, mud, and extreme conditions: TX-500. For everything else: IC-705.
vs Yaesu FT-891 (~$600): 100W HF mobile. Not portable in the same way — heavier, no battery, no VHF. If power matters more than portability: FT-891. If you want to hike with your radio: IC-705.
Accessories Worth Buying
- BP-307 battery ($80) — longer runtime, worth it immediately
- LC-192 backpack case — protects the radio in the field
- AH-705 tuner ($200) — if you use non-resonant antennas
- Windcamp battery adapter (~$30) — lets you use external power packs cleanly
- SP-40 speaker ($30) — better audio than the built-in speaker (which is quiet outdoors)
Who Should Buy It
- POTA/SOTA activators who prioritize portability and all-band coverage
- Hams who want one radio for home/portable/VHF/UHF/digital/analog
- People who value the operating EXPERIENCE as much as the contacts
- D-STAR users who want a portable node radio
Who Shouldn't
- Contest operators (10W doesn't compete)
- Budget-conscious (wait for prices to drop or buy used)
- Home-station-only operators (IC-7300 is better for less money at home)
- People who lose or break things regularly ($1,300 on a trail = anxiety)
The Verdict
The IC-705 costs too much for what it does on paper. But it doesn't live on paper — it lives on a picnic table in a state park, on a summit overlooking a valley, on a beach at sunrise working stations across an ocean on 5 watts.
The experience of operating this radio in the field is worth the premium. Whether that premium fits YOUR budget and operating style is the only real question.
