Sending email over HF radio used to mean buying a hardware TNC (terminal node controller), fiddling with baud rates, and praying the PACTOR modem didn't choke. VARA HF changed that equation. It's a software soundcard modem that turns your radio and computer into a high-performance digital link, no external TNC hardware needed.
If you're licensed General class or above and want to send and receive email over HF via the Winlink network, VARA HF is the most accessible way to get there in 2026.
What VARA HF Actually Is
VARA (developed by EA5HVK, José Alberto Nieto Ros) is a software modem that runs on Windows and handles the modulation/demodulation of data signals through your radio's soundcard interface. It supports speeds from 25 bps (extremely robust, weak-signal mode) up to about 8,490 bps (wide bandwidth mode, less common).
The standard VARA HF mode operates in a 500 Hz bandwidth using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) with adaptive speed control. The software automatically adjusts its modulation scheme based on channel conditions. Bad propagation? It drops to slower, more robust modes. Clean path? It ramps up. This happens in real-time, mid-transfer.
VARA HF exists in two versions:
- Free version: Limited to ~175 bps maximum throughput. Functional but slow for anything beyond short messages.
- Licensed version: $69 USD one-time purchase. Unlocks full speed (up to ~8,490 bps in 2300 Hz mode, ~2,300 bps in standard 500 Hz mode). Worth it if you plan to use Winlink regularly.
The free version is fine for testing and occasional short emails. If you're doing EMCOMM work or sending anything with attachments, pay the $69.
What You Need
Hardware requirements are minimal:
- HF transceiver with a soundcard/USB audio interface. The IC-7300, FT-991A, TS-890S, and most modern transceivers have USB audio built in. Older radios need a SignaLink USB or similar external interface (~$120).
- PTT control: CAT (serial/USB), VOX, or hardware PTT through the interface. CAT is preferred because it's faster and more reliable.
- Windows PC. VARA HF is Windows-only. It runs fine under Wine on Linux (with some effort), but Windows is the supported path. The software is lightweight, any PC from the last decade works.
- General class license or higher. VARA HF operates on HF frequencies where Technician privileges are limited. You need General or Extra.
That's it. No external TNC, no PACTOR modem ($1,500+ saved right there), no special hardware.
Installation: Step by Step
1. Install Winlink Express
Download Winlink Express from winlink.org/WinlinkExpress. It's free. Install it, create your Winlink account using your callsign. The registration process emails you a password.
2. Install VARA HF
Download VARA HF from rosmodem.wordpress.com. Run the installer. It puts itself in C:\VARA or C:\VARA HF by default.
After installation, open VARA HF standalone first (before connecting to Winlink). You need to configure audio.
3. Configure Audio Devices
In VARA HF, go to Settings → SoundCard:
- Input: Select your radio's USB audio input (shows as "USB Audio CODEC" for Icom radios, or "SignaLink USB Audio" for external interfaces)
- Output: Same device, output channel
- Drive level: Start at 50%. You'll adjust this later.
For IC-7300 users specifically: set the USB Audio level in the radio's menu (Menu → Set → Connectors → USB AF/IF Output) to about 50%. The modulation input level (USB MOD Level) should start around 30-40%.
4. Configure PTT
In VARA HF, Settings → PTT:
- CAT (recommended): Select the COM port your radio appears on. For the IC-7300 via USB, this is usually the Silicon Labs CP210x port. Set baud rate to match your radio (115200 for IC-7300 default). Choose "CAT" PTT type and select your radio model.
- VOX (backup): Set your radio to VOX mode. Works but adds latency and risks false triggers.
5. Connect VARA HF to Winlink Express
Open Winlink Express. In the "Open Session" dropdown, select "Vara HF Winlink." Click "Open Session."
Winlink Express will launch VARA HF automatically (if the path is configured correctly in Settings → VARA HF Setup). The two programs talk to each other via a local TCP connection.
Making Your First Connection
Now the fun part.
In Winlink Express VARA HF session window:
- Click "Channel Selection" to see a list of VARA Winlink gateway stations (RMS nodes) and their frequencies.
- Pick a gateway you can likely reach. For continental US daytime, try a gateway on 20m or 40m. At night, 80m and 40m work better.
- Select the gateway. The software will set your radio's frequency via CAT (if configured) or show you the frequency to tune manually.
- Click "Start" to begin the connection attempt.
VARA will send its connection request. You'll hear the distinctive VARA warble from your radio's monitor. If the gateway hears you, it responds and the link establishes. The software then automatically sends and receives any pending messages.
My first VARA HF connection took four attempts. I kept picking gateways that were too far for the current band conditions (I was trying 20m at 10 PM local time, which... yeah). Once I switched to a 40m gateway about 800 miles away, connected on the first try. Propagation matters here just like voice contacts.
Audio Level Setup: Getting This Right
This is where most people struggle. Incorrect audio levels cause either no decode (too low) or distortion and ALC action (too high).
The golden rule: NO ALC deflection during VARA transmission.
Procedure:
- Set your radio to a clear frequency (or use a dummy load)
- In VARA HF, use the built-in "Tune" function (the sine wave icon)
- Watch your radio's ALC meter while transmitting
- Adjust the VARA output level (or USB MOD Level on your radio) until ALC just barely stays at zero
- Back off another 10% from there
VARA's signal is a complex multi-tone waveform. ALC compression destroys it. Unlike SSB voice where a little ALC is normal, digital modes need a clean, linear signal.
Run 25-50W for VARA HF. You don't need 100W for most connections, and lower power is easier on your signal quality. I typically run 40W on my IC-7610 for VARA sessions and connect reliably to gateways 500-1,500 miles away.
Frequency Considerations
VARA HF Winlink stations operate on specific frequencies allocated by the Winlink Development Team. Common ones:
- 40m: 7.101.5 MHz (dial), 7.102.0 MHz center
- 20m: 14.108.5 MHz (dial), 14.109.0 MHz center
- 80m: 3.596.5 MHz (dial), 3.597.0 MHz center
- 30m: 10.145.5 MHz (dial), 10.146.0 MHz center
Your radio should be in USB mode. The dial frequency is 1,500 Hz below the center frequency because VARA uses 1,500 Hz as its center audio tone by default.
These frequencies are coordinated to avoid interference with other users. Don't transmit VARA on random frequencies.
Propagation Tips for Reliable Connections
VARA HF is more forgiving than voice in some ways (the adaptive coding handles fading well) but still subject to the same propagation physics.
- 20m: Best for daytime contacts 500-2,000+ miles
- 40m: Good for medium distances (200-1,000 miles) day and night, best around evening
- 80m: Nighttime only for distances beyond 200 miles. Short daytime range (under 200 miles)
- 30m: Excellent for Winlink. Quieter band, good propagation characteristics day and night for medium distances
Here's the thing about VARA versus PACTOR: VARA's adaptive speed control is remarkably good at maintaining a link through fading. I've had connections hold through deep QSB on 40m that would have killed a PACTOR II session. The trade-off is that VARA sometimes takes longer to transfer data because it spends time at lower speeds during fades.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
"VARA HF not connecting" (most common problem):
- Check propagation. Is the band even open to the gateway's location?
- Verify your frequency is correct (USB mode, check dial vs. center frequency)
- Make sure your audio levels aren't overdriving
- Try a different, closer gateway
"Connection establishes but transfer fails":
- Almost always an audio level problem
- Check for ALC action during transmit
- Interference on frequency can corrupt data packets
"Winlink Express can't find VARA HF":
- Confirm VARA HF is installed in the expected path
- In Winlink Express → Settings → VARA HF Setup, browse to the VARA HF executable
- Make sure VARA isn't blocked by Windows Firewall (it uses localhost TCP ports 8300/8301)
"I can hear gateways but they don't hear me":
- Power too low for the distance
- Antenna issues (high SWR on digital frequency)
- PTT not triggering (check CAT config, try VOX as a test)
VARA FM: The VHF/UHF Companion
Quick aside: VARA also comes in an FM version for VHF/UHF Winlink connections through packet gateways. VARA FM is significantly faster than traditional 1200-baud packet (up to 25,000 bps on a clean FM channel). If you have a local Winlink gateway on VHF, VARA FM is worth setting up too. Same developer, same purchase unlocks both.
EMCOMM Applications
VARA HF through Winlink is a genuine emergency communications tool. When internet and cell networks go down, Winlink over HF provides email connectivity anywhere in the world with nothing but a radio, a laptop, and a wire antenna.
ARES and RACES groups across the US use Winlink for health-and-welfare traffic during disasters. The 2024 hurricane season saw significant Winlink traffic supporting evacuation coordination in the Gulf states. If you're involved in emergency communications, VARA HF proficiency is no longer optional. It's expected.
Your First Session Checklist
- Install Winlink Express + register callsign
- Install VARA HF + configure audio and PTT
- Verify audio levels with dummy load (NO ALC)
- Pick a gateway on a band with current propagation
- Connect, send a test message to yourself
- Receive it back on your next session
The whole setup takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you've got a radio with USB audio. Once it's working, sending an email over HF feels like the future and the past colliding in the best way. Give it a try this weekend.
